The person behind the record

A practice between the page and the picture

QuillandQalb grew out of a habit of reading closely and looking slowly. Some days a book sends me to the camera; other days a photograph sends me back to a page. This site is where those threads are kept together, in one quiet place.

Reading and image-making are daily companions here. I keep notes on what a sentence does, how a shadow falls across paper, and why a particular line or edge stays with me long after the afternoon ends.

Craft and critique

Words and images in conversation

Textual critique and photography share a common discipline: close attention to the detail that changes how a piece feels. A line break, a shape at the edge of the frame, the way light settles across a page all shape meaning before any conclusion is drawn.

I treat personal craft as an ongoing exchange. Readings respond to other people's work, musings follow thoughts a little further, and original pieces test what I have learned from both. I like leaving room for these different kinds of work to sit beside one another.
